The terrorists timed the attack to target as many people as possible. It started around noon on Saturday when the mall was packed with shoppers. Nick Handler, an American working for an NGO in Kenya, was right outside the mall with his young daughter. His pregnant wife was inside shopping as the shooting started. He spoke to Anderson about taking cover inside a storage room.
